England showed plenty of effort but found New Zealand too strong in their international at Warrington's Halliwell-Jones Stadium.

Mark Calderwood staked a claim for a Great Britain place with two first-half tries, while David Hodgson and Eorl Crabtree also touched down.

England led 22-16 late on but the Kiwis ran in three tries to clinch the win.

Henry Fa'afili and Paul Whatuira put the game beyond England's reach while Lance Hohaia had the final say.

Hohaia, who was used as hooker in the Kiwis' opening Tri-Nations win in Sydney, was impressive at scrum-half on his return from an ankle injury.

He is now set to plug the gap caused by the departure of Stacey Jones when the Kiwis face Great Britain at Huddersfield's Galpharm Stadium next Saturday.

England coach Karl Harrison has urged Great Britain counterpart Brian Noble to consider calling up some of his players for the Tri-Nations campaign.

"The young guys played really well and it was a proper test," he said.

"The players did reasonably well defensively and we contained a pretty useful outfit. There are a few things there for Brian Noble to look at."

England captain Thorman was also pleased with his performance and said he would wait in the hope of receiving a call from Noble.

The Huddersfield half-back said: "The boys can hold their heads high - but it's no consolation at the end of the day to come so close to a Kiwi side that is probably the form side in the world at the minute.

"Mark (Calderwood) proved he can do it on the international stage and all we can do is just keep our fingers crossed."

England: Mathers, Calderwood, Sykes, Westwood, Hodgson, Thorman, Robinson, Crabtree, Alker, Wood, Wild, Radford, Wilkin. Replacements: Jones-Buchanan, Reardon, Griffin, Lynch.
