Wales courting Super League pair
Harris (left) and Cunningham (right) will hope for a Great Britain call-up
Harris (left) and Cunningham (right) will hope for a Great Britain call-up
Wales are holding the slim hope of enticing either Iestyn Harris or Keiron Cunningham to play against Scotland in their European Nations Cup opener.

The pair will clash on Friday when Cunningham's St Helens meet Harris' Bradford Bulls for a place in the engage Super League Grand Final.

The winner of that will definitely be unavailable for Wales' 16 October date.

However, both players are likely to be in the Great Britain squad and it would be a surprise if they played for Wales.

Cunningham has hardly played for Great Britain for the past three years due to a string of serious injuries and even if available would be unlikely to risk his involvement in the Tri-Nations.

Likewise Harris, who spent three years in rugby union with Cardiff, Cardiff Blues and Wales, will not want anything to get in the way of adding to his Great Britain caps.

Wales chairman, Mark Rowley said: "It would be a tremendous boost for Wales if Harris or Cunningham were able to appear.

"Both are due to go straight into the Great Britain training camp for the Tri-Nations when their Super League season finishes, so it all hinges on whether they are able to be released to play just the one game for us.

"We will be making every effort to ensure this happens."

Harris' Bradford Bulls team-mate, hooker Ian Henderson, has already withdrawn from the Scotland squad for the European Nations Cup because of club commitments.

Both played a full part on Saturday night in the Bulls' play-off record 71-0 destruction of Hull to set up that showdown with Saints, the winner advancing to face Leeds in the Grand Final.

The Grand Final is on 15 October, the night before Wales and Scotland open their European Cup campaign in Bridgend.

Henderson's place in the Scotland squad is taken by Halifax hooker Ben Fisher, a former Sydney Roosters player, who is poised to win his first cap.

European Cup schedule:
October 15: France v Russia (Arles)
October 16: Wales v Scotland (Bridgend)
October 23: Russia v Georgia (Moscow)
October 23: Scotland v Ireland (Glasgow)
October 29: Ireland v Wales (Dublin)
October 30: Georgia v France (Tbilisi)
November 5: Final (Carcassonne).
