Iestyn Harris has displayed all his old skills on his return to league |
Although we lost against Hull at the weekend, I think Iestyn Harris proved to everyone that he is one of the most talented players around. He's only had four matches in rugby league to reacquaint himself with the sport after three years in union.
But he was outstanding on Sunday - and we'll be expecting the world of him from now on!
Seriously, I think he's going from strength to strength. He's slotted in really well and he's a great guy to have around the camp.
There had been whispers and rumours, but it's so seldom that anything actually comes of this kind of chit-chat that the players more or less ignored it. But this time it did come to fruition and we were the beneficiaries.
As a squad and as a club we're all really pleased with the contribution Iestyn's made since he's arrived at Odsal.
On a different tack, there has been a lot of debate about the decision to bring French club Perpignan into Super League in 2006. Bringing in a foreign club was tried - and failed - with Paris back in the 1990s.
Clubs like Castleford have a rich rugby league history |
Hopefully the people that are involved with Perpignan and the officials at Super League will learn from the mistakes that have been made in the past. Anything that gives me the opportunity to have a weekend in the south of France can't be all bad!
But there are teams that have gone down - like Halifax last year and potentially Widnes or Castleford this - that have a fabulous tradition of rugby league.
Clubs like those deserve to be playing at the top level.
The passion and knowledge of their fans is as good as anywhere in the world and they are in the middle of great catchment areas for new rugby league players.
Global expansion of the game has got to be the way forward in the long term. But it has to be done in the right way.
We'll just have to wait and see. It's not like me, but I'm going to sit on the fence on this one!
