Gleeson (pictured) played in Saints' heavy loss but Long did not |
Garry Schofield believes the RFL should have taken a tougher line over the St Helens betting scandal. Saints stars Martin Gleeson and Sean Long were handed lengthy bans for betting on their own team to lose.
But former Great Britain captain Schofield told the Daily Star Sunday the pair had been let off lightly.
He said: "A Joe Nobody prop from York or Hunslet would have been slapped down with anything up to a life ban, told to go away and forget rugby league."
Gleeson, who played in the game, received a four-month ban, while Long was suspended for three months.
RFL chief executive Richard Lewis told BBC Radio Five Live's Sportsweek programme: "I think it was pretty much the right length of suspension.
"It was a very serious offence and it's being treated accordingly.
"But to keep in context it was two players being pretty stupid frankly and it's important not to go over the top."
