Salford City Reds have applied for planning permission for a new �35m stadium. The Reds, who were relegated from the Super League last season, hope to move into the 20,000-capacity ground by the start of the 2005 season.
The ground will include an approved "safe standing" area to house the fans who currently occupy the terracing at the club's current home, the Willows.
The stadium, which will also include a 200 bedroom hotel and conference and banqueting facilities will be built close to Barton Bridge on the M60.
Salford Council are also backing the new development which will be funded by private investors.
Arup, the architects who have also been responsible for Cardiff's Millennium Stadium, Sydney Stadium and the City of Manchester Stadium are working on the project.
