Sculthorpe: Saints on the march
test hellotest
By Paul Sculthorpe
St Helens star and BBC Sport Online columnist
line

St Helens no longer have to rely on outscoring teams to win a game of rugby league.

People used to say the only way Saints could win was by relying on a strong attack.

The 19-0 defeat of Wigan must have come as a shock in that case. We have been working hard on our defence and it is beginning to pay off.

Ignore the loss at London. It was a shocking performance, but we quickly put it to the back of our minds.

Kieron Cunningham (centre)
Cunningham was in superb form against Wigan
We didn' even analyse the game on video.

To beat Wigan a few days later was the perfect response. Our completion rate was probably the best it has been all year.

It may have been the best Saints performance I'e been involved in from that respect. As for our defence, you can't say much more than we stopped them from scoring.

Keiron Cunningham's try-saving tackle on Mark Smith had a lot to do with that.

That was a great individual effort - and Keiron played the game with two bad ankles.

Pound for pound, he has to be the strongest player in British rugby league.

Challenge Cup

Tommy Martyn also grabbed his share of the headlines. It was a magical display and so typical of Tommy.

Everything he tried came off, whether it was his kicking from hand, his defence-splitting passes or his drop goal attempt.

And he always seems to come up with the goods against Wigan. They must hate the sight of him.

Let's hope he is on top of his game when we play Leeds on Saturday.

We play them in the semi-finals of the Challenge Cup the week after so this game takes on added significance.

They are playing well and with a goalkicker like Ben Walker in their side we know we can't afford to give any penalties away. He can kick them from anywhere.
