Broncos buy British

The London Broncos have added three more players to their squad and all three are British.

The Super League club have made a concerted effort to buy British in an effort to reduce the cosmopolitan nature of their squad.

The arrival of Rob Purdham, Neil Budworth and Rob Jackson means that the club will include 11 home-grown players in their 25-man pre-season tour to Australia.

"It's something we've been working towards," coach Tony Rea said.

"It's good for the game in England, but we've not got a bias on the passport.

"It's an attractive opportunity for these young guys to play alongside some of the most experienced and talented players in the game."

Purdham, England's under-21 stand-off, comes to the capital from Whitehaven.

Budworth and Jackson, former Wigan reserve players, have been signed on loan deals.

London - who last week announced the signing of Super League trio Steve Hall, Francis Stephenson and Richard Marshall - have also snapped up Huddersfield's Chris Thorman.

However, the promising stand-off has been loaned back to the Giants for their Northern Ford Premiership campaign.

The Broncos have also re-signed veteran forward Russell Bawden, along with his former Melbourne Storm team-mate Wayne Evans, a second or front rower who played for the Northern Eagles for 2001.

The newcomers will link up with the 16 players retained from last season for a month-long warm-weather training camp down under.

London have also appointed a new assistant coach in Steve Deakin, who quit as head coach of Keighley to succeed Damian McGrath.

Deakin was assistant coach to John Kear when Sheffield Eagles won the Challenge Cup in 1998.
