The peloton begins the ascent of the first serious climb of the Tour, the Col de Marie-Blanque.  Jan Ullrich, Richard Virenque and Michele Bartoli lead the peloton up the wet climb.  Lance Armstrong powers away from his challengers on the final climb to Lourdes-Hautacam.  Michael Boogerd, Ullrich and Alex Zulle struggle to keep up with the pace.  Marco Pantani, after breaking away with the American, drifts off his wheel back to the chasing groups.  Javier Otxoa is pursued by the devil ...  ... and raises his arms to the heavens in delight, as he crosses the line for the stage win.  The loneliness of the long distance cyclist - a lone rider nears the end of the stage.
