Davies, last year's beaten finalist, came back from a set down to secure a 3-2 win against the England captain.

After falling behind, Davies hit form, winning the second set with a three-dart average of 102.6.

The next two sets were shared, but Davies took the decider by three legs to one to book a second-round clash with Australia's Steve Duke.

Duke beat Dutchman Albertino Essers 3-1, despite losing the opening set by three legs to one.

He was helped as Essers suffered an attack of dartitis, which stops players releasing the dart, and went on to lose the second set.

Essers took the third set to a deciding leg, but Duke was not to be denied and clinched the match with a double nine.

Number three seed Mervyn King clinched his place in the next round with a 3-1 win over Dutch star Rick Hofstra - but there was a controversy.

With the score 1-1 in sets, the players left the stage because King felt the oche was not the right length.

Officials checked, and the match was eventually restarted - with the majority of crowd behind Hofstra.

King won the next two legs before Hofstra hit back to take it to a decider.

But King nailed double eight and he also won the next set, which included a superb 156 checkout, to seal victory.

"I'm quite within my rights to have anything I want checked, and I went about it the right way," said King.
