Hankey looked to be in complete control after sealing the first two sets, but allowed Monk to draw level before winning the deciding set.

"I went 2-0 up so quickly, but I knew Colin would hit back," said Hankey.

"He put that little bit of pressure on and my darts started to wander - I was thinking too much instead of playing."

In other day two action, Australian number one Tony David lost 3-2 to Darryl Fitton.

Fitton won a nervy fifth leg ousting the number four seed with a double nine.

Afterwards, funeral director Fitton said: "I thought the pressure was back on me in the final set but I just got that extra bit of lift and it was enough to get me through.

"It's fantastic to get through to the second round. Playing Tony David you know you have got a tough game but I was well prepared for this one."

Seventh seed Gary Anderson was another high profile casualty, going down 3-0 to Tony O'Shea.

O'Shea will face Gary Robson in the second round after the Englishman came through a tight match against Steve Coote 3-2.

In another match that went the distance, the youngest player in the draw, Stephen Bunting, came through by the odd set in five against Vincent van der Voort.

Bunting, an 18-year-old business studies student, came back from 2-1 down against the experienced Dutchman to line up a second round meeting against Hankey.

In the second day's final match, James Wade crusied past Shaun Greatbatch 3-0.
