Williams won silver at the 2009 World Championships in Lake Placid |
Olympic gold medallist Amy Williams has been omitted from the Great Britain team for this month's skeleton World Championships in Germany. The 28-year-old missed half of this season and so failed to earn Team GB a third berth for the women's event. Britain's top-ranked sliders Shelley Rudman and Donna Creighton will be given the two available spots. "I'm disappointed, but the girls have had a terrific season this year," Williams told BBC Sport. "They've earned their places. I'll now be focusing my attention on doing a full season next season and continuing my build-up towards Sochi in 2014." Performance director Andi Schmid called it a "difficult decision". Schmid added: "We were disappointed not to achieve a third quota place for the women's team. "We had to look at performances this season and that meant we had to go with Shelley and Donna." Olympic silver medallist from 2006, Rudman finished the 2010/11 season as the number two slider in the world, having won two World Cup races. Creighton was sixth overall. Williams became Britain's first individual Winter Olympics gold medal winner for 30 years when she secured the title in Vancouver in 2010 but has had mixed results on her return. She managed only 12th place at the Igls World Cup event in January but secured bronze at the European Championships later the same month, with Rudman taking gold. The absence of Williams for much of the season has meant Team GB failed to amass enough points to gain three places at the women's World Championships, which start on 24 February. The British men's team in Koenigssee will consist of Kristan Bromley, Chris Type and Andy Wood.
