Britain has hosted a World Cup snowboarding event for the first time.

A World Cup big air took place at Battersea Power Station in London with Finland's Peetu Piiroinen triumphing ahead of Stefan Gimpl of Austria.

Switzerland's Benedikt Nagel was third on the specially-built ramp which was 37-metres high and packed with hundreds of tonnes of real snow.

Organisers Snowsport GB declared it a success and said it would be held again in 2009, if sponsorship was secured.

The London big air is part of a four-day winter sports festival and kicked off the northern hemisphere season.

Snowsport GB chief executive Mark Simmers was delighted with the success of the event and said it was a huge fillip for winter sports in the UK.
