Moelgg had never won a World Cup race until 9 March |
Italy's Manfred Moelgg was crowned the World Cup slalom champion after long-time leader Jean-Baptiste Grange messed up his chance of victory. In a dramatic title-deciding final race, Grange made a huge mistake four gates from home in Bormio, Italy. It meant Moelgg needed only to finish in the top 13 in the second leg to claim the crystal globe and he duly came sixth in front of his home crowd. The race was won by Austria's Reinfried Herbst, ahead of Daniel Albrecht. Moelgg had never won a World Cup race until he claimed victory in Kranjska Gora, Slovenia, a week before the season's finale in Bormio, although the 25-year-old had been consistent, claiming five podium places this season. Grange was 21 points ahead of Moelgg going into the final race after a season which included three victories and a second place, but his freak slip-up so close to the finish saw his dreams of winning the title abruptly end. The women's giant slalom title had already been decided before the final race, Italy's Denise Karbon claiming the crystal globe. But the Bormio race went to Austria's Elisabeth Goergl, with Manuela Moelgg, sister of Manfred, second and Austria's Kathrin Zettel third.
