Skiers are able to enjoy lots of snow |
Heavy snow has started to fall in European ski resorts after mild weather caused the cancellation of early season World Cup races. The season-opening races in Soelden in Austria were called off in October and this weekend's men's downhill race at Val d'Isere in France was cancelled.
But in the last 24 hours, ski resorts in France and Italy have had between 20-35cms of snow and more is forecast.
It means the women's races at Val d'Isere on 16-17 December could be run.
The International Ski Federation said it would make a final decision on Saturday. It has carried out a snow inspection and said the weather forecast was positive.
The Austrian resort of Reiteralm is able to host the men's World Cup combined race that should have been held in Val d'Isere.
The Ski Club of Great Britain said many recreational skiers had been worried their winter and New Year plans would be scuppered by a lack of snow.
But Al Morgan, the ski club's information manager, said: "Many people in the snowsports industry were beginning to get concerned about the lack of snow but the snow has now started to fall and more is forecast for the weekend."
