Injuries have forced Kostelic to take a break from skiing |
World Cup champion Janica Kostelic is to sit out the entire 2006/7 season because of persistent injuries. The 24-year-old Croatian said: "My decision is to miss this season, primarily because I've had lots of problems with my knees and back.
"The pain causes me quite a lot of problems. For now it's a one-year break and later we will see what happens."
Kostelic has won a combined nine world championship and Olympic gold medals and three overall World Cup titles.
"Of course it was not easy [to make the decision]," she said. "But, put simply, I'm not a machine.
"I have tried, I was skiing while in pain but that cannot be tolerated forever."
