Shani Davis became the first black athlete to win an individual gold medal at the Winter Games after claiming the 1000m speed skating title on Saturday. The 23-year-old American recorded a time of one minute 8.89 seconds, edging compatriot Joey Cheek by 0.27ths of a second into silver.
