Martin helped Britain to an opening win in Turin

Rhona Martin and her new-look team held off a tough challenge from their opening round-robin opponents to clinch the game in the final end.

Britain, with only Martin and Debbie Knox from the 2002 line-up, took the lead twice before Denmark pulled level again in the eighth end.

But Danish skip Dorthe Holm made a mistake in end 10 to concede victory.

Martin predicted more testing matches during the round-robin phase, which continues on Tuesday with a rematch of her Salt Lake City final against Switzerland.

"It was quite boring curling but the ice isn't allowing for anything better at the moment - it is not swinging enough so for that reason I am not going to take chances," she said.

"It is disappointing for championship ice, because it usually has more swing."

Martin shot to fame four years ago when she led the curling team to Britain's first Winter Olympic gold medal since ice dancers Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean in 1984.

Martin made their Olympic return on Monday, entering Pinerolo ice rink to the sound of bagpipes.

"People keep asking me to compare. It's completely different. Salt Lake was four years ago. It's gone," she said.
