Andrew Bogut has been picked by the Milwaukee Bucks as the top overall pick in the 2005 NBA draft. The Australian 20-year-old, a versatile seven-foot centre from the University of Utah, played for his country at the Athens Olympics.
Bogut should make an immediate impact at Milwaukee, who finished at the foot of the Central Division last year.
He was chosen ahead of Marvin Williams, who went to Atlanta, Deron Williams (Utah) and Chris Paul (New Orleans).
"Adding the quality and the competitor in Andrew Bogut, we really feel we're solid in the centre position," said Bucks general manager Larry Harris.
"Looking down the road we thought Andrew would be a good foundation piece for us.
"He can step in right away we can get back into the play-off picture next year."
Bogut, who is of Croatian descent added: "This is a dream come true - I am proud to be Australian and proud to be Croatian too."
Utah became the first university to have players picked first in the NBA and NFL drafts in the same year, after quarterback Alex Smith was chosen by the San Francisco 49ers in April.
