 Canseco's disputed claims have overshadowed the new season |
Jason Giambi, Curt Schilling and Sammy Sosa are to be subpoenaed to testify before the USA's House Government Reform Committee regarding steroids. The Baltimore Sun reported that Rafael Palmeiro, Frank Thomas, Jose Canseco and Mark McGwire will also be called to appear at the 17 March hearing.
The newspaper claimed that baseball commissioner Bud Selig and union head Donald Fehr are also likely to appear.
The new season begins on 3 April, with steroid use a major talking point.
Last month saw the publication of Canseco's book entitled, "Juiced: Wild Times, Rampant 'Roids, Smash Hits, and How Baseball Got Big".
Canseco admits to using steroids during his career and accuses a number of former team-mates of doing the same.
Giambi, Bonds and Gary Sheffield all testified before the grand jury in San Francisco tackling the Balco steroids controversy.
Major League Baseball's steroid testing programme has come under fire in recent years, and its new testing policy involves has been criticised as too lenient.
A first-time offender will be suspended for 10 days, and the penalty is 30 days for a second offence.
Third-time offenders will be suspended for 60 days, and anyone found guilty of a fourth offence faces a 12-month ban.
Under the new agreement, every player will undergo at least one unannounced test on a randomly selected date during the playing season.
There is no specific limit on the number of tests to which any player may randomly be subjected, and it includes random testing during the off-season.
