Damon gives the Sox a speedy lead-off hitter who has scored more than 100 runs each of the last four seasons. He played for Oakland in 2001. Aftert agreeing his $31m four-year contract, he said: "They're bringing me over here to fit in and they know I'm going to." Damon's agent, Scott Boras, is also finalising a $65m, five-year agreement between Chan Ho Park and the Texas Rangers. Boston trimmed their payroll by offloading second baseman Pokey Reese, traded Tuesday from Cincinnati to Colorado and dealt to the Red Sox the following day. They also cut right-hander Todd Erdos, left-hander Allen McDill, catcher Steve Lomasney, infielder Chris Stynes and outfielder Izzy Alcantara. Mets chase Mo However, Lomasney later agreed a minor league contract with the club. The New York Mets are interested in former Red Sox slugger Mo Vaughn, currently with the Anaheim Angels.

Meanwhile, Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig has finally given clubs permission to release schedules and sell individual game tickets for next season. Some pundits see this as a sign that his plans to eliminate two of MLB's struggling franchises are in doubt as far as 2002 goes. Robert DuPuy, baseball's chief legal officer, notified teams they could release tentative schedules, but said Selig will press forward with contraction. "All tickets are being sold subject to change," DuPuy warned. Thirty-four players in all became free agents when teams failed to offer them contracts by the 20 December deadline. They include: Arizona: infielder-outfielder Midre Cummings, right-hander Robert Ellis and left-hander Eric Knott | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Other top US Sport stories: Links to more US Sport stories are at the foot of the page. | |||
