Britain's Alistair Brownlee won the Kitzbuhel triathlon to move top of the World Championship Series rankings.

Brownlee won the fourth event of the eight-race series in Australia - his third win in succession - and overtook second-placed Javier Gomez at the top.

"I can't believe I won, I felt awful in the swim and out on the bike but once I got on the run I felt great," he said.

Fellow Briton Helen Jenkins finished fifth in the women's event, which was won by Australian Emma Moffatt.

"I'm enjoying a great year and I hope it will continue through to the Grand Final on the Gold Coast back in Australia in September," said Moffatt.

The result, which left Jenkins fifth in the overall rankings with four legs to go, was series-leader Moffatt's third straight victory following wins in Washington DC and Iowa.

In the men's event Brownlee is now on 2,400 points, with Gomez on 2,368.

"I'm not really thinking too much about leading the World Championship Series right now, I'm just looking forward to the next race and having the opportunity to compete in London in a month's time," said Brownlee.
