I just want to inspire people - Tancock
Since bursting onto the world stage in 2005, Devon's Liam Tancock has set the world of swimming alight, winning 21 medals and breaking the 50m backstroke world record on three occasions.
The 25-year-old has been in fine form once again in 2010, coming away from October's Commonwealth Games in Delhi with four medals, including two golds.
In recognition of his achievements, Tancock was voted BBC South West's Sportsman of the year 2010.
The story of Tancock's success begins at home in Devon, where he learnt his craft under the tutelage of John Randall at Exeter Swimming Club.
He told BBC Spotlight: "Exeter Swimming Club really gave me a base to move on into senior swimming.
"I actually went to see John [Randall] and the Exeter swimming team after I came back from the Commonwealth Games.
"I went and said hello to everyone and showed the kids my medals which they really appreciated.
"It's really nice to keep that bond with the swimming club as I'm an Exeter boy.
"I just love swimming and want to inspire people as much as I can."
Tancock king of the backstroke
His achievements in the pool have seen Tancock become Britain's leading male swimmer.
But as a teenager, he was also a promising rugby player, turning out on the wing for local clubs.
Although rugby lost out to swimming when he was 14, Tancock still retains a soft-spot for the sport.
He said: "I'll go down to Devon for Christmas to see my family and friends, although unfortunately the Exeter Chiefs are away on Boxing Day, but Exeter City are at home.
"So I'll be going to watch the mighty Exeter hopefully get a win against Swindon, which will be really nice.
"I think I've even been invited to go on the pitch at half-time and show off my Commonwealth medals."
