Plymouth's Couch wins two bronze medals in Florida

Young Plymouth diver Tonia Couch confirmed her growing status in the sport by winning two bronze medals at the FINA Diving Grand Prix in Florida.

The 20-year-old came third in both the women's individual and synchro 10 metre platform events.

Couch told BBC Sport: "It's my best result at an international event, so it's given me a lot of confidence.

"I've learned over the years to relax when I perform, as when I put myself under pressure I don't do so well."

Couch scored 334.25 points in the individual event, with the Chinese duo of Sinuo Ma (380.25) and Jiao Liu (347.40), claiming the gold and silver medals.

In the synchro, Couch partnered Sarah Barrow, and the pair managed to finish on 293.04 points.

Chinese divers Jiaming Zhu and Shengping Wu took gold with 350.88 points, while silver went to Mary-Beth Dunnichay and Haley Ishimatsu (311.64) from the United States.

Couch's coach Andy Banks said his charge is improving steadily all of the time.

"The result bodes well for the future," Banks told BBC Sport.

"It was another steady performance and Tonia's aim now is to continue where she left off.

"She's certainly become a more confident diver over the last 12 months."

Couch will be back in action next month at the prestigious FINA Diving World Cup, which runs from 2-6 June in Changzhou, China.
