David Davies admits "he has stuff to sort out" before the Welsh swimmer bids to defend his 1,500m Commonwealth Games freestyle crown in Delhi in October. The 25-year-old was ninth in the 400m freestyle at the British Championships, 14 seconds outside his personal best. And Davies only made the final when fellow Welshman Tom Haffield withdrew. "It's a new experience getting beaten by ten guys in the British field," he admitted. "But I could see it coming as I've had a bad couple of months." The Olympic 10k silver medalist - who broke onto the world stage by winning 1,500m bronze at the 2004 Athens Olympics - was furious after his British embarrassment in Sheffield. Robert Renwick won the 400m title at the British trial on Monday while Davies, the British 400m freestyle record holder, finished more than nine seconds slower than the Glasgow swimmer - and he pulled no punches when discussing his form afterwards. "I'm not going to give you loads of excuses that everything has been hunky-dory and this is just a bad day at the office," defending champion Davies told BBC Sport. "This has been a bad couple of months for me - and coming here and seeing does indicate and let it sink in that I have stuff to sort out. "The positive side is that it is still early in the season so I have until October to try and address these things. "But more importantly it is two years to the London Olympics and I can still get the blend that I need but at the moment things aren't quite blending at training sessions." He adapted his training regime in 2009 to develop his speed but Davies had previously revealed that the Commonwealth Games could be his pool swansong as the Barry swimmer may concentrate on the new 10k open water event - where he won Olympic silver at the Beijing Games. The British Championships double as the Commonwealth trials but qualifying procedure differs according to nation. Swimmers winning finals in Ponds Forge will almost certainly appear at October's Games, but the selection process for the Commonwealths will be completed by the European Championships and individual English, Welsh and Scottish national trials at different dates in the summer.
