Britain's Jo Jackson and world champion Federica Pellegrini have withdrawn from the European team for the Duel in the Pool in Manchester on 18-19 December.

Jackson, 23, who won bronze at the Beijing Olympics and set a new 400m freestyle world record in March, has been troubled by illness for six weeks.

A severe respiratory infection has ruled her out and she will be replaced by Swansea swimmer Jaz Carlin.

Pellegrini has to attend an official ceremony in her Italian homeland.

The bi-annual Duel in the Pool series will adopt a new format this year, with swimmers from Britain, Germany and Italy combining to take up a select American outfit.

The United States team has been selected from the fastest finishers at the US Swimming National Championships, Word University Games, the US Open and the FINA World Championships.

There will be 13 men's events and 13 in the women's category, with two relays for both men and women.

A swimmer may enter up to six events, any combination of individual and relay events, and the course for the competition will be the 25-metre short course.
