Swindon swimmer Jazmin Carlin is confident of winning a place in the Wales 2010 Commonwealth Games squad and says going to Dehli is her sole focus.

The 19-year-old went to the 2006 event in Australia while still at school.

The freestyle specialist could qualify as early as January through the trials and has already posted times that would be good enough to earn a place.

"I'm having a gap year which will let me focus more on improving some of my weaknesses," she told BBC Wiltshire.

Going in 2006 has given me more drive and motivation

"There's quite a few competitions where I can qualify. I've already got the times, it's just doing it at the designated competitions," said Carlin who competes in the 200, 400 and 800m freestyle.

"In 2006 I was only 16 and it was a bit daunting for me.

"I think going in 2006 has given me more drive and motivation and hopefully I'll be successful."

In July Carlin helped Great Britain win a bronze medal at the World Championships in Rome, swimming alongside Rebecca Adlington, Jo Jackson and Caitlin McClatchey in the 4 x 200m freestyle relay.

"It was amazing to get the experience of going out to Rome and then to bring back a medal as well, I was so happy," she said.

The teenager moved from Wiltshire to sit her A-levels at Swansea College where she is now based, but before thinking about university her ambition is to make Dehli.

"I'm having a year out before going to university," she said. "It's giving me a chance to have more sleep during the day and relax more instead of being full-on with work and training and having to manage them both."
