Diver Tom Daley and 10km open water swimmer Keri-Anne Payne have already won golds for Britain at the World Swimming Championships. Our best hope of adding to that is double Olympic champion Rebecca Adlington who goes again in the 400m and 800m freestyle.
Adlington may not have it all her own way in the 400m freestyle in Rome though as Joanne Jackson pipped her to gold at the British Swimming Championships in March and in doing so, broke the world record. But it's not all about Adlington and Jackson.
Gemma Spofforth is the only woman to have won three back-to-back NCAA titles in America. The 21-year-old British 100m backstroke record holder was fourth in Beijing and she also has a chance in the 200m backstroke in Rome.
Ellen Gandy, 17, lives and trains in Australia but she came back for the British Swimming Championships in March and almost broke the 200m butterfly world record. She faces China's Zige Liu and Jiao Liuyang who won gold and silver in Beijing.
Hannah Miley is a fantastic all-rounder and the 19-year-old could win the 400m individual medley. She holds the European record and recently lowered the European mark in the 200m IM but Australia's triple Olympic champion Stephanie Rice will be favourite.
Francesca Halsall is looking strong in the freestyle sprints. The 19-year-old lowered the British 50m freestyle record to 24.53 seconds in March, but Australian world record holder Libby Trickett and America's Dara Torres will provide stiff opposition.
Trickett is the only women to go under 24 seconds for the 50m freestyle and has won gold at the last two World Championships. The 24-year-old Australian also took the 100m freestyle, 100m butterfly and two sprint relay titles in Melbourne two years ago.
The British men will struggle to perform to the same level as the women but Liam Tancock, 24, represents our best hopes in the 50m backstroke. He held the world record in the event last year.
Speaking of the men, America's record-breaking Olympian Michael Phelps is by far and away going to be the stand-out performer. There will also be some young Americans to watch out for in the breastroke events.
Japanese backstroker Irie Ryosuke is special. The 19-year-old broke the 200m world record in May only for Fina to refuse to ratify it as they did not approve of his swimsuiit. I'm sure we'll hear a lot more about the swimsuit as the competition progresses.
