GB win first medals in Montreal
Peter Waterfield and Leon Taylor
Waterfield and Taylor won silver in Athens
Peter Waterfield and Leon Taylor earned Britain's first medals at the World Swimming Championships with bronze in the men's 10m synchronised diving.

Caitlin McClatchey, 19, also won bronze in the women's 400m freestyle with 18-year-old British team-mate Joanne Jackson in seventh.

The race was won by France's Laure Manaudou ahead of Ai Shibata of Japan.

Teenager Manadou, who is Olympic champion, won from lane eight after only just qualifying.

McClatchey, whose uncle won a relay bronze at the Montreal Olympics in 1976, was delighted at landing Britain's first swimming medal of the championships.

"It's my first year as a 400m swimmer and it's pretty special to win a bronze given I've only been doing it a short time plus this is where my Uncle Alan won his Olympic medal," she said.

We managed to get that medal we've been after for so long

Waterfield and Taylor, who won a silver medal at last year's Olympics, had earlier opened Britain's medal account in the platform diving.

The pair scored 367.95 points to finish behind winners Dmitry Dobroskok and Gleb Galperin of Russian and China's Yang Jinghui and Hu Jia.

Waterfield and Taylor have enjoyed podium finishes at practically all major international meets but the World Championships had always eluded them.

"I'm really pleased with how we performed and we managed to get that medal we've been after for so long," said Waterfield.

Australia's Grant Hackett won the men's 400m freestyle final, which took place without six-time Olympic champion Michael Phelps, who failed to qualify.

But Phelps did get some consolation, leading off the victorious USA team in the men's 400m freestyle relay final.

The Americans came home nearly three seconds clear of Canada with Australia winning bronze.

Australia won the gold in the women's 400m freestyle relay with Germany second and the USA in the bronze-medal position.

Roland Schoeman set the first world record of the championships in the semi-finals of the men's 50m butterfly.

The South African clocked 23.01 seconds to wipe 0.29 off the previous record established by American Ian Crocker last year.

Yuri Prilukov of Russia captured the silver and Oussama Mellouli took the bronze.

Li Ting and Guo Jingjing kept up China's diving dominance by winning the women's 3m synchronised springboard title.

Germany's Ditte Kotzian and Conny Schmalfuss claimed silver and bronze went to Ukrainians Kristina Ishchenko and Olena Fedorova.

  • Britain's Chris Cook bettered his own personal best time twice as he qualified fifth fastest for the final of the 100m breaststroke, which takes place on Monday.
