Peirsol breaks backstroke record
Aaron Peirsol
Peirsol said he had not expected to break the record
Aaron Peirsol broke his own world record in the men's 100m backstroke at the US World Championship trials.

The 21-year-old finished in 53.17 seconds in Indianapolis to top the time of 53.47 seconds that he set when winning gold at the Athens Olympics.

The American has only recently returned to competition after taking four months after the Olympics.

The trials will determine the US team for the World Championships, which take place in Montreal in July.
