Ben Titley of Loughborough University, and Stockport Metro's Ian Turner are expected to be added to the team as part of Sweetenham's plans.

"It is tough to pick coaches out of a club programme four months before the Olympics and then expect them to be international coaches," he said.

"We would like most of our coaches to be experienced at Olympic level."

Sweetenham, who was appointed following the Sydney Games when British swimmers came home empty-handed, guided the team to two medals in Athens - their highest haul since 1984.

A total of 10 swimmers booked their places at this year's World Championships in Montreal after the weekend trials in Manchester.

Swimmers who failed to make the standard will have a second chance to get on the team in June.

But Sweetenham wants both swimmers and coaches to be fully prepared for the Olympic Games in China in three years' time.

"There is a fine bunch of young coaches coming through who I'm sure are going to challenge the senior coaches and move it on.

"We will need a group of very seasoned, well-prepared coaches, based on the philosophy that the coach's experience must always be ahead of the athlete's talent.

"By having just a select number of coaches we can focus on what will allow us to set the goal of walking on to that pool deck in 2008 with a very seasoned, experienced bunch of coaches.
