The London Marathon is a wonder of organisation. To successfully get over 32,000 people round a course that twists through the middle of one of the world's busiest cities is no mean feat.

But did you realise someone has to prepare over 32,000 sandwiches for runners, lay out over 20,000 metres of crowd-control barriers and distribute nearly three-quarters of a million bottles of water?

There are 23 water stations, one every mile from three miles into the course

39 First Aid Stations along the route

50 lorries to transport runners' kit from the start in Greenwich to the finish on the Mall

One of the 500 stretchers is put to good use

76 pubs on the 26.2 mile course, 52 of which will be holding charity bashes

88lbs of petroleum jelly to protect runners' nipples and crotches from severe chaffing during at least three hours of high-intensity exercise.

440ft of urinal trough in which male runners can relieve themselves

500 stretchers for the ones who are really suffering

950 portable toilets around the course for runners
