Murphy was rewarded for his commitment to the competition |
Shaun Murphy won the final of the inaugural Players Tour Championship with a 4-0 win over Martin Gould. Gould secured his first tournament final place with a 4-3 win over Mark Selby in the afternoon and had little left to give in the evening session. "I missed a couple of silly balls, and against someone of his calibre he'll punish you every time," said Gould. "But it's a learning experience. I take that on the chin and look forward to the next tournament." Some players, most notably Ronnie O'Sullivan, failed to get fully involved in Barry Hearn's 12-tournament competition, making them ineligible for the week-long finale in Dublin. But Murphy played in all 12 and having won through to the final with another 4-0 victory, over Matthew Stevens at lunchtime, took home a cheque of £60,000 for his troubles, with Gould earning £25,000 as runner-up. "To win any tournament is fantastic and I'm privileged to win the first PTC Grand Finals," Murphy said. "I've just enjoyed playing as much snooker as we have this season. I said at the start of the PTC series that I thought the standard was going to go through the roof."
