Selby secured his place in the quarter-finals of the German Masters

Mark Selby beat Stephen Hendry 5-3 to end the challenge of the seven-time Crucible winner at the last-16 stage of the German Masters.

Hendry, 42, may have to qualify for the World Championship if he is not ranked in the top 16 after the Welsh Open.

Masters champion Ding Junhui raced to a 5-2 victory over Peter Ebdon and faces Selby in the last eight in Berlin.

Wembley runner-up Marco Fu received a bye into the quarter-finals after John Higgins withdrew for personal reasons.

Higgins, who beat Robert Milkins 5-3 in his last-32 match earlier on Friday, flew home from the Berlin event following the death of his father.

"After finding out the news about John's father, it puts things into perspective and all the players will be thinking of him and wish him well," Fu said after his 5-1 victory over Mark King.

The Hong Kong player has dropped out of the top 16 and needs to produce good performances in Germany and Wales before heading to the Crucible in April.

"I need to claim some big ranking points here and in Wales so this was a big win for me," he added.

"I feel good though. I think this arena and format is perfect for me. The open-plan setup is a lot like the Asian Games so I have tasted it before, whereas it's a new experience for some of the other players and they may find it distracting."

Fu will play Joe Swail in the last eight after the Englishman caused a shock by knocking out world number five Shaun Murphy with a 5-2 win.

Former world champion Mark Williams beat Anthony McGill 5-1 in the morning session to reach the last 16 and then saw off fellow Welshman Dominic Dale 5-2 in the evening to reach the quarter-finals.

He will play Joe Perry, who was another surprise winner, thrashing Ali Carter 5-1.

Stephen Maguire raced through his last 32 clash with Welshman Daniel Wells, winning 5-2 before whitewashing Ricky Walden 5-0 in their last 16 clash.

Maguire meets Graeme Dott, who overcame Anthony Hamilton 5-2.
