Stevens and Williams both advance

Stevens cruised into a 4-0 lead in his first-round match

Wales' Matthew Stevens and Mark Williams both won 5-3 to reach the second round of the Shanghai Masters.

Stevens beat 2009 runner-up Liang Wenbo, who was warned for the early concession of a frame, while Williams saw off 2008 champion Ricky Walden.

World number five Stephen Maguire also won 5-3 despite Judd Trump firing in breaks of 135 and 102.

World number 10 Mark Allen lost 5-2 to Stuart Bingham, who impressed with a clearance of 142 in the first frame.

Graeme Dott was pushed all the way by Ken Doherty before prevailing 5-4 courtesy of a break of 70 in the decisive frame.

Mark Davis compiled a break of 105 in the deciding frame of his match against Marco Fu and Andrew Higginson saw off Ryan Day 53, despite a highest break of only 59.

"It was tough today, Ricky has won a tournament here," said Williams, a former two-time world champion.

"I played well after the interval and I'm happy because it was a big match for me."
