Wallace defeated in China Open

Patrick Wallace made the world quarter-finals in 2001
Patrick Wallace from Dungannon lost 5-2 to Ireland's Leo Fernandez in the first preliminary round of the China Open.

In addition to forfeiting badly-needed ranking points in his bid to retain his professional ticket, Wallace missed the chance of an extra bonus in Prestatyn.

The former world quarter-finalist had hoped to overcome Limerick man Fernandez in the hope of facing Jimmy White in the second round.

That prize now goes to 31-year-old Fernandez, who now lives in Cumbria.
