O'Sullivan celebrated his UK win with his family |
Newly-crowned world number one Ronnie O'Sullivan has admitted he feels he only has a limited amount of time left in the sport. The 32-year-old's 10-2 win over Stephen Maguire in the Maplin UK Championship restored him to top spot and ended a 32-month win drought in ranking events. "I haven't got long. I always said I wanted to go out on a high, which means winning a big tournament," he said. "At 8-0 I thought, Is this the time? But it's too early for me to quit now." The once-volatile youngster seems to have mellowed with age and gave the impression he is enjoying the experience of playing a bit more. "People want to watch me playing. Every time I've played this week it's been packed, and I've been blown away because it shows how much fans really want to see me play," he said. "It's a great honour for me to be able to bring joy to people because of the way I play my sport. "Jimmy White was the same; Arnold Palmer, Tiger Woods - they play with that kind of excitement and make you think 'what's going to happen'." | 606: DEBATE |
Sunday's win in Telford restored "The Rocket" to world number one spot in place of beaten semi-finalist Shaun Murphy, who drops to third spot, while Maguire climbs into second. World champion John Higgins is fourth and Mark Selby has ended a good year by jumping two places to fifth. Meanwhile, Marco Fu, who won the Grand Prix, is rewarded for making the UK last eight by seeing his provisional ranking rise up four places to 13th. Fellow quarter-finalist Jamie Cope jumps eight spots to 18th, while two-time world champion Mark Williams climbs from 40th to 33rd.
