Hendry reached the milestone with a 127 in the third frame |
Stephen Hendry became the first player to make 700 centuries in competitive matches as he reached the last 16 of the Malta Cup. The Scot thrashed Robert Milkins 5-1 and will next face Neil Robertson, who beat Marcus Campbell by the same score.
"I'm glad I didn't know I was on 699 as I'd probably have twitched!" said Hendry, who reached the milestone with a 127 break in the third frame.
But fellow Scot John Higgins crashed out 5-3 to Hong Kong's Marco Fu.
Higgins, runner-up last year, rallied from 4-1 down with breaks of 80 and 62 but Fu held his nerve with runs of 36 and 29 in the eighth frame.
Higgins was also warned during the match for conceding a frame out of turn after missing an adventurous pot when attempting to double the brown ball in the third frame.
"I'm just struggling badly, but I'm not doing anything technically
different," he said. "I'm not feeling very good - and I don't know why.
"I'm not happy with the way I'm playing. Something's crept into my game and I'm going to have to work hard to get it out."
Fu will next play Ali Carter, who overcame Rod Lawler 5-2.
There was also further disappointment for veteran John Parrott, who lost 5-1 in the third qualifying round to fellow Englishman Michael Holt, whose reward is a meeting with Masters champion Ronnie O'Sullivan.
Former world champion Shaun Murphy came from 4-2 down to eventually prevail 5-4 in a marathon encounter with Ricky Walden.
Walden was leading 4-3 when the match was suspended because it had overrun into the evening session.
And after over an hour's break, it was Murphy who returned to the stronger to book his place in the next round, where he will play Stephen Lee.
