Sponsors back Hunter scholarship
Paul Hunter.
Hunter won his third Masters title in 2004
Masters sponsors Saga have pledged a cash boost for the scholarship set up to honour former champion Paul Hunter.

The scholarship was launched by World Snooker after Hunter died at the age of 27 from stomach cancer last October.

Saga Insurance will donate 50 to it every time a player at this year's event makes a break of 50 or more.

"Paul had an amazing Masters record, and we feel it is appropriate to make a donation to the new scholarship," said Saga Group boss Andrew Goodsell.

"Hopefully one day we will see a graduate of the scheme taking part in the Masters."

The scholarship, the first of its kind, is designed to help train a talented young player for a year.

A World Snooker spokesman said: "This is an excellent gesture from Saga Insurance and their donation will allow us to improve the level of training provided to the scholar.

"We will be announcing more details of the scholarship during the tournament."

Hunter won the Masters in 2001, 2002 and 2004 and was one of the invitational event's most popular players.

This year's Masters begins at Wembley Arena on Monday, 15 January.
