White has been sliding down the rankings in recent seasons |
Snooker legend Jimmy White got his season off to an inauspicious start by losing his opening qualifying match at the Shanghai Masters in Prestatyn. White was beaten 5-3 by world number 74 Alfie Burden in the second round of the new season's first ranking event.
The 45-year-old fought back from 3-0 down to level at 3-3, but Burden made breaks of 60 and 63 to seal the win.
White struggled for form last season, and has started the new campaign at 60th in the world rankings.
Burden will take on Scotland's Alan McManus in the penultimate qualifying round, while White now has a three-month wait until the qualifiers of the next ranking tournament.
Judd Trump, 17, who last season became the third youngest person ever to play at the Crucible, made progress towards Shanghai by beating Wales' Gareth Coppack 5-1.
