Jimmy White failed to reach the televised stages of the Northern Ireland Trophy at snooker's qualifying school in Prestatyn. White lost 5-3 to Pontefract's Jimmy Michie to be denied a place in the season's opening tournament in Belfast.
White fell from eighth to 35th in the rankings last season, consigning him to the preliminary rounds of the game's top events.
"He played very well and punished me," the snooker legend said afterwards.
"I got used to the conditions but it was like taking a step back in time.
"I'm a bit match shy rather than nervous but I'll just have to carry on practising. I still enjoyed the match."
The six-time World Championship finalist has been overlooked for the eight-man BBC Pot Black event on 2 September but will still be a strong contender for an invitation to the Masters at Wembley Arena in January.
He needs to win two matches to qualify for the Crucible phase of the World Championship next April.
