Classy Ding cruises past Hamilton
Ding Junhui
Chinese teenage sensation Ding Junhui thrashed Anthony Hamilton 9-3 to book a second-round tie against Jimmy White at the UK Championship in York.

The 18-year-old world number 56 made five breaks over 60.

Mark Davis beat 1991 champion John Parrott 9-5, while Neil Roberston edged out Rory McLeod 9-8.

In the evening session, Joe Sawil rattled off seven straight frames for a 9-3 win over Andy Hicks. Mark Allen and Mark King were among the other winners.

World amateur champion Allen, 19, triumphed 9-6 against 2004 runner-up David Gray.

"The match today was a bit scrappy in parts, which I don't like because I would rather be making breaks, but you have to win the scrappy frames," said Allen.

I've got to be realistic, I'll never win a ranking tournament again

"David had a lot of kicks but you have to capitalise on them."

Hamilton said Ding has the potential to become a big star.

"He's a proper player - you have to play much better against him than I did," said world number 17 Hamilton.

"If you don't play well he will just hammer you. His long potting is great and he can only get better and better.

"There's no reason why he can't win a tournament like this even though it's so early in his career."

Meanwhile, veteran Parrott admitted his days as a worthy challenger for a snooker title are numbered.

"It's nowhere near as disappointing to lose now as it used to be," said the 1991 world champion and BBC pundit.

"I used to sulk and go home and kick the cat but not any more.

"I've got to be realistic, I'll never win a ranking tournament again, but for as long as I keep enjoying competing then I'll carry on."
