Joe Swail beat world number one Ronnie O'Sullivan 4-2 |
Local hero Joe Swail beat world number one and tournament favourite Ronnie O'Sullivan 4-2 in the Northern Ireland Trophy on Thursday night. The Belfast man will play Scotland's Alan McManus in the quarter-finals.
A 67 clearance to the pink had brought O'Sullivan level at 2-2 but Swail hit a 138 break in the next frame and sealed victory with a nice plant in the sixth.
On the other table Stephen Hendry beat Ding Junhui 4-2 to gain revenge for his defeat in last season's China Open.
Hendry now faces Northern Ireland's new professional Mark Allen in the last eight.
But the night belonged to wildcard entry Swail who has slipped down the world rankings in recent seasons.
The former world semi-finalist has now beaten O'Sullivan five times in 12 meetings.
