Hendry eases past Davis

Stephen Hendry
Hendry has the upper hand in meetings with Davis
Stephen Hendry brushed aside Steve Davis 5-2 to reach the third round of the Regal Scottish Open on Tuesday evening.

Davis has not beaten Hendry in a ranking event for over 10 years, with the Scot winning the majority of their 56 career meetings.

Hendry, playing in his home city of Edinburgh, made three centuries and, in doing so, reached a milestone of 600 career tons.

"Depending on who you speak to I've made anywhere between 600 or 605 centuries," said the seven-times world champion.

"But at least I can relax now. There was a fantastic atmosphere out there and that always makes you play better. It felt more like a semi-final or a final rather than a first match."

Hendry now meets stablemate David Gray, who earlier knocked out Joe Perry 5-1.

Jimmy White ended his six-game losing streak with a 5-2 victory over Rory McLeod.

The 40-year-old had not won a match in a ranking tournament this season after disappointing displays at the European Open and Irish Masters.

John Higgins, the runner-up in Dublin, continued his good run of form by storming to a 5-0 win over Anthony Davies.

The Scot will now meet White in the last sixteen on Thursday evening and the Londoner knows he will have to improve rapidly.

"I'll have to up my game against Higgins," said White. "But if I bring my `A' game to the table I know I can win."

Despite his win over McLeod, White did not look at ease at the table in Edinburgh.

Indeed it was the Northamptonshire-based qualifier who made the early running taking the first frame with a break of 55.

White responded winning the next two despite struggling to find his touch and he added the fourth with a colour clearance after McLeod had been 53-14 in front.

McLeod took the fifth and should have levelled at 3-3 and it was only his failure to put away his chances that allowed White to steal the win.

White will also be relieved to halt his slide in the world rankings as he already goes to the world championship later this month facing relegation from the top 16 elite.

Ken Doherty recovered from his defeat in the Irish Masters to defeat Nottingham's Anthony Hamilton 5-2.

Doherty next plays Australian Quinten Hann for a place in the last eight.

Hann, battling to keep his place in the top 16, whitewashed Grimsby qualifier Sean Storey 5-0.
