Burden sees off Fu

Alfie Burden set aside personal trauma to reach the second round of the Regal Scottish Open in Edinburgh on Sunday.

The world number 38 from Harrow beat Marco Fu 5-4, but admitted he had almost withdrawn from the tournament.

Burden's baby daughter has been in hospital suffering from bronchitis and his brother-in-law is recovering after being shot in the head during a mugging last week.

"I didn't want to play but my family persuaded me to turn up," Burden said.

"Even when I was 3-1 up I didn't want to know but my dad, who is with me, said I should carry on.

"I'm not bothered about snooker at all. I only played because my brother-in-law wanted me to. He's the luckiest man in the world to still be alive.

"We were already worried about my daughter, who's been ill in hospital so I wasn't thinking about the game."

Burden had previously won only one match all season but began impressively against Fu, building a 3-1 interval lead.

Fu fought back to lead 4-3 aided by a run of 108 but Burden won the eighth and clinched the decider as well to go forward to a last 16 meeting with Northern Ireland's Joe Swail.

"It's been a very difficult time," Burden said. "I've had a terrible season as well and struggled with confidence. I just don't know how I won."
