Marco Fu was beaten 5-4 by Alfie Burden |
Alfie Burden set aside personal trauma to reach the second round of the Regal Scottish Open in Edinburgh on Sunday. The world number 38 from Harrow beat Marco Fu 5-4, but admitted he had almost withdrawn from the tournament.
Burden's baby daughter has been in hospital suffering from bronchitis and his brother-in-law is recovering after being shot in the head during a mugging last week.
"I didn't want to play but my family persuaded me to turn up," Burden said.
"Even when I was 3-1 up I didn't want to know but my dad, who is with me, said I should carry on.
"I'm not bothered about snooker at all. I only played because my brother-in-law wanted me to. He's the luckiest man in the world to still be alive.
"We were already worried about my daughter, who's been ill in hospital so I wasn't thinking about the game."
Burden had previously won only one match all season but began impressively against Fu, building a 3-1 interval lead.
Fu fought back to lead 4-3 aided by a run of 108 but Burden won the eighth and clinched the decider as well to go forward to a last 16 meeting with Northern Ireland's Joe Swail.
"It's been a very difficult time," Burden said. "I've had a terrible season as well and struggled with confidence. I just don't know how I won."
