American Bode Miller won his second gold medal in the space of eight days with downhill victory at the World Championships in Bormio. The 27-year-old overall World Cup leader, who also won last weekend's super-G race, clocked a time of one minute 56.22 seconds.
Miller's compatriot Daron Rahlves took silver, with Austria's previous world champion Michael Walchhofer in third.
Britain's Finlay Mickel finished a highly creditable 11th place.
Mickel's surprise display was Britain's best-ever performance in a men's event at the World Championships, beating Konrad Bartelski's 15th place in 1974.

The 27-year-old finished in one minute 57.53 seconds, just 1.31 seconds behind Miller. "That was amazing for me to pull out a big performance on such a big day," said Mickel.
"This is great for my career. I had nothing left to give, I was absolutely exhausted and couldn't even wave to my parents.
"It was tough, I was bounced around a lot at the top but got faster at the bottom. I was happy when I saw the time but I had no idea if I could hold on to that position."
Despite his victory, Miller wasn't completely happy with his performance which saw him beat Rahlves by 0.44 seconds after being one of the day's early starters.
"I made a few errors which cost me time on the lower part of the course," he said.
"I guess the course must have deteriorated, giving the others a rougher time, but it's great to have two Americans in the top two spots."
Miller has now been crowned world champion four times in four different events.
At the last world championships in St Moritz he won titles in giant slalom and the combined event.
There was disappointment for the other top Austrians.
Olympic champion Fritz Strobl finishing fourth and former double Olympic and world champion Hermann Maier only managed 17th.
