Maier lands World Cup crown
Austrian star Hermann Maier
Austrian star Hermann Maier won Sunday's super-G at Garmisch-Partenkirchen and took the title as well.

It was the fifth super-G title of his career and he is also on course to win the overall crown.

Maier leads Lasse Kjus by 190 points with two races left but a knee injury has put paid to Kjus's season.

He capped a remarkable comeback after almost losing a leg in a motorcycle accident in Ausgust 2001.

Maier also overtook slalom specialist Benjamin Raich at the head of the overall standings.

"This is one of my sweetest wins," said Maier, who still experiences pain in his reconstructed leg

"To come back after all that and win my super-G globe back is just great.

"I had not expected it. This is all very emotional,"

Maier beat Pierre-Emmanuel Dalcin of France by 0.07 seconds in Germany to claim his third win of the season.

Austria's Raich crashed out on the tricky Kandahar course and dropped to second place in the overall World Cup standings.

The 25-year-old suffered concussion and could be a doubt for next week's giant slalom and slalom in Adelboden, Switzerland.

Maier leads with 922 points with Raich on 918 and fellow Austrian and defending champion Stephan Eberharter in third on 871.

A two-time Olympic champion in 1998, Maier is seeking his fourth overall World Cup title.

But with more technical events to come rather than his favoured speed races, Maier admitted he was unlikely to hang on to the overall lead.

"I don't really think I'll win the World Cup this year," said Maier.

"Maybe it's time for a new face to win it."

Maier's win was the 45th victory of his career and he is now fourth in the all-time winners' list.
