Le Defi Areva
Pierre Mas has played a big role during training
Mas is one of the sailing stars of the French challenge
Hopes are high on board the French entrant to the Louis Vuitton Cup.

Having reached the semi-finals with limited means in 1999, a Luc Gelluseau-led design team has enjoyed the advantage of more time and money this time around.

  Le Defi Areva
Country: France
Base: Lorient
Heads: Pascal Herold, Luc Gelluseau and Pierre Mas
Skippers: Philippe Presti and Luc Pillot
Budget: US$25m
Sail no: FRA 69, 79

And the sailing squad will have benefited from a new base in Lorient, France, which is said to provide access to exactly the same conditions as those expected in the Hauraki Gulf.

There is no shortage of talent in a sailing team led by Pierre Mas.

Match-racing champions Luc Pillot and Philippe Presti will share the skipper duties after the defection of Bertrand Pace to Team New Zealand.

They will be aiming to steer FRA 69 through the early rounds at least.

Verdict: Another campaign of improvement but no ultimate prize.
