TeamOrigin recorded an impressive win over French/German crew All4One on Wednesday to earn their chance for a place in the semi-finals
Britain's Team Origin failed to qualify for the semi-finals of the Louis Vuitton Trophy regatta in New Zealand. Skippered by triple Olympic gold medallist Ben Ainslie, they were beaten by Swedish team Artemis. The sudden-death match replaced the original best-of-three series that had to be abandoned because of light winds in Auckland on Thursday. Italians Azzurra, Team New Zealand and another Italian outfit Mascalzone Latino complete the semi-final line-up. The British team had been comfortably ahead after opting for a diverging course, but at the first cross Artemis were four lengths in front, equating to a 28-second advantage at the top mark. Artemis suffered a small rip in their spinnaker but to their immense good fortune it was along the foot of the sail and they recorded a victory by 30 seconds. Team Origin helmsman Ainslie admitted: "A disappointing result for us, it was a close race and the guys did a great job, we made one mistake and paid dearly for that. "It's been a really competitive event and great to see some top teams here and such close race action. As ever it's been a really useful event for us, the guys have given 100%, and although disappointed, we will take a lot from it and continue to move forward." At the beginning of the event Artemis were beset by gear failures but New Zealand-born grinder Craig Monk said they had made steady improvements. "It was nice for us to have a race where everything finally went right," said Monk. "We kept it tight and pounced when we had to." Team New Zealand and Mascalzone Latino went through on Wednesday with first-round elimination wins after they finished as the top two seeds following an eight-team round-robin competition. The regatta is designed to provide competitive racing for America's Cup teams not involved in the latest event last month, which was a duel between Oracle and Alinghi, which Oracle won 2-0.
