British match-racers Lucy Macgregor, Annie Lush and Ally Martin have taken over as world number ones in the new Olympic-class Elliot 6 metre.

The 2009 Sailing World Cup series winners moved top after taking silver at Miami's World Cup meet.

They have deposed French skipper Claire Leroy who had held the top spot for more than four years.

Macgregor, 23, said: "We've been sailing together for one year and have proven ourselves to be a solid team."

The trio were unbeaten in 18 races to reach January's Miami final, but were edged out in the deciding race against the United States by half a boat length.

"Reaching the number one spot was a great feeling," Macgregor continued.

"We were really pleased with our performance in Miami.

"The match racing event was a great success with some new teams, plus some old teams from the match racing circuit as well as former Yngling, 470 and Radial sailors coming through and racing in the new Elliot 6m boats.

"It's all looking quite promising for this year's World Cup series."

Lush, 29, added "We're really enjoying the Elliot 6's - they're really physical boats and are producing some close, exciting races.

"The teams who are sailing the boats well are rewarded, but all the gains you make are small and hard to achieve."

The three-person Elliot 6m boats have been selected to replace the Yngling for the 2012 sailing competition at the London Olympics.
