Robertson claimed gold at the 2000 and 2004 Olympics |
Sailor Shirley Robertson has announced she will attempt to win an unprecedented third consecutive gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The 37-year-old Scot is already the only British female athlete to have claimed gold at consecutive Games.
Isle of Wight-based Robertson also revealed she is expecting twins during Cowes Week, from 29 July to 5 August.
She said: "I look around all walks of life and women do the most amazing things and also have families."
Robertson is not guaranteed a place in the Games, despite having won gold medals in Sydney in 2000 and Athens in 2004, and will have to qualify if she is to realise her dream of a third straight success.
She will compete in the Yingling class, in a team with Annie Lush, 26, and Lucy Macgregor, 19.
"I've been training most of the winter and I've enjoyed it," Robertson told BBC Radio Five Live.
"I had a break after Athens and came back with new vigour and enthusiasm.
"Sailing with different people is very fresh and very new."
